Finding Faith

It's Hump Day!
Today is Day 23 of my period of "Coronavirus Isolation."  It's Wednesday of Holy Week, the first day of Passover.   So far today is a tough day.  I didn't sleep well last night, so I'm feeling crappy.   Add to that, my allergies are acting up.   I so want to crawl back into bed.  I may just do that.

Let's get to the fun stuff first...

Spring Sightings
Spring has definitely sprung!   It was in the mid-60's yesterday and was a perfect day for a walk.    The forsythia bushes are fully in bloom.  The local elementary school has hearts on their cafeteria windows and a sign that says, "Brunton students ROCK."  When it's just me and Leia walking, she's so good.  She walks right next to me (lower left) and is easily able to walk off leash when we aren't near cars (lower right).   I have really come to love our walks.

Project Update

On Sunday I started a garden from seeds.   So today is Day 4 of my garden and you can see the lettuce seeds just beginning to sprout in my peat pellets.  Kind of exciting!  The other seeds aren't showing any activity just yet.   (And still no progress on Mitch's room.)

Laundry:  The Joke's On Me

I think I figured out a solution to the laundry problem by changing my routine.  Instead of doing laundry every day, I decided to do it 2-3 days instead.  It means more laundry at one time, but I don't have it looking at me every day.   As of 12:00 p.m. today, one load is folded and put away, another is in the dryer and a third is in the washer waiting to be dried.  I just need to go and move it so I can finish it all.   Fingers crossed this will make the whole laundry scene less maddening to me.   (As long as Brian doesn't continue to deliver mystery laundry out of who knows where.)

Finding Faith
As Christians, the story of the crucifixion may have become a ritual part of our faith history.  We know the story of the Last Supper, Christ's betrayal, arrest and crucifixion.  It's a story that we retell every year at Easter.  It's a tradition.   Maybe we go to Mass or church; watch a movie about the life and death of Jesus; attend a Passion Play; and have a special family dinner.  (When I was growing up we always watched Charlton Heston as Moses in the 1956 film "The Ten Commandments" on Easter night.)

This year I'm having a hard time with the idea that Easter is this Sunday.   This is Holy Week.   This is a time when we are supposed to gather together to remember and reflect the sacrifice of Jesus' death on the cross and to celebrate the triumphant miracle of his resurrection.  I'm just not feeling it.

This whole "THING," this Coronavirus "thing" has me feeling disconnected.   I miss Mitch.  I miss my parents.  I know I can talk to them on the phone and FaceTime them.  Facebook Live and Zoom have brought Church right into my living room.   But I miss the human interaction, the community.  All of "THIS" just seems so impersonal.

When was the last time you really thought about the story of Christ's death and resurrection and what it means to us today?  I've been reflecting on this all week and am reminded of the message Pastor Brian shared with us on Sunday.  Right before Jesus was betrayed and arrested, he went with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane to pray.  While his disciples came with him to Gethsemane, they fell asleep, so he was alone.  Even though Jesus knew what was going to happen to him, he prayed to the Lord, "Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.  Yet not as I will, but as you will." (Matthew 26:39)  Three times he cried out to God.  But heaven was silent.

Today in-person interactions are pretty much off-limits, but we are able to stay in touch by phone, Facebook, Zoom or other "virtual platforms."  In spite of this many of us feel very much alone in the face of the we are experiencing in light of the Coronavirus Pandemic.   In the Garden of Gethsemane, despite the fact that his disciples were there with him, they kept falling asleep, so Jesus was all alone.   Whatever you are dealing with today, whether you have a loved one who is sick or who has died, or you've lost your job, or you just feel alone, maybe like Jesus, you have cried out to God for mercy and maybe you may feel like heaven is silent.

Be encouraged.  Remember, there is hope.  Christ chose to die for us so we could know his presence.   So that we will not be forsaken.  Christ accepted his fate so that we could know the cup of salvation.  Psalm 116:13 says, "I will lift up the cup of salvation and praise the Lord's name for saving me."   Jesus suffered so that we can be saved.   We do have to face trials on earth.  We are not saved from those.  But because of Jesus, we are not alone, we are not forsaken.

We can find faith in the darkness.

Seeking Smiles
The Coronavirus Pandemic has directly affected every one of us to some degree.  In the face of darkness and despair, it is so important to seek out the good in the world - whether near or far, surely there is light in the darkness.   If you haven't seen or heard of it, let me tell you one place you will surely find smiles.  John Krasinski started his own YouTube channel entitled Some Good News.

With Us

Can I hear a big sigh of relief from every Mom out there who celebrates Christmas?  This is the craziest time of year for anyone who has a child under the age of "I still believe."  (Whatever age that might be for your kid/s.)  Even after your kids "get it," the fact remains that there are still gifts to buy, wrap and put under the tree ... Preparations.  Parties.  Baking.  Cooking.  Shopping.  Work.  Don't even want to look at the credit card bills.  Sigh.
Our Christmas tree.  It's a little lopsided at the top, but I think it's super pretty this year.
This song seriously wraps up how I feel in a little more than three minutes:

Just Breathe by Johnny Diaz

Third cup of joe just to get me through the day.
I want to make the most of time, but I feel it slip away...
♬ ♪ ♩ ♫

My son's birthday is December 13, which added a whole new level of crazy to the month.  Even though my kids are still home, they are grown / growing up.  We don't have to attend 15 different Christmas parties anymore.  And...I don't have to go with them everywhere.  It's a huge sigh of relief.
Love the lipstick...and the Snapchat filters.

I used to say that December 26 was my favorite day of the year because FINALLY it was all over.  I seriously hated the stress.  How I kept it together, I don't know.  I do know what I do now and it has made all the difference for me in making the Christmas season truly joyful.
This is me today, as I write this blog.  No makeup.  Messy hair.  Listening to Youtube while my son has his friends over.
How Can It Be by Lauren Daigle is currently playing.  I so enjoy this time after Christmas to find myself again.
Christmas music all day every day.  Yes, from Thanksgiving until Christmas, it's nothing but Carols all day.  Our local radio station plays nothing but Christmas music during that time, so I'm tuned in all the time.  At work, I play a variety of Christmas tunes on YouTube.  I'm a little slow to the uptake, but I found that YouTube has a mix of different songs that are comparable to what you chose and it plays pretty much all day.  Go ahead and give it a try.  Search for your favorite song on YouTube and on the right side bar, there are other suggestions.  Towards the top, it says, "50 videos +" and "Mix -" with the name of your song.  Click on that and you can listen all day.

It's been so relaxing for me while I've been working.  I heard this song last week:

Light of the World by Lauren Daigle
The world waits for a miracle
The heart longs for a little bit of hope
O come O come Emmanuel

O Come O Come Emmanuel is probably my absolute favorite Christmas song.  I love the depth of it, the broad spectrum of the notes.  It touches me more than any other song.  So when I heard this one, with the "O come O come Emmanuel" as the refrain and "Glory to the light of the world."  I was moved.

Why do we even sing, "Emmanuel"?  What's the big deal?  In the Bible, Isaiah prophesied:
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:
The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
In the New Testament, Matthew repeats this prophesy and explains that Immanuel means, "God with us."  (Matthew 1:23)

God with us.

Jesus was born to be God in flesh, to be with us and live here with us.

But that was over 2,000 years ago.  Jesus died.  Really?  God with us?

Yes.  He is with us.  Even today.  In the hecticness of life.  In our pain.  In our joy.  In our sorrow.  He is with us.  God is with us.

O come, O come, Emmanuel.

We sing this familiar Christmas carol, calling, "Come, be with us."  He is not just with us at Christmas.   He never wants us to live a rat race life, let alone spin ourselves into such a craze to celebrate His birth.  I guarantee that.  In fact, with all the secularism of Christmas, the exorbitant shopping and lack of peace we experience during this holiday season, one might say we actually remove ourselves from Him for the sake of celebrating His coming, His birth, His return.

As you wind down into the New Year, think about this.  God is with us.  He is with you.  Sometimes it's hard to feel it.  To know He is here, by our side.  But in the stillness and quiet, he is as close as you allow him to be.  Close your eyes.  Listen.

God with us.

Radio Silence

What a year 2016 has been!
After the ugliness of the US presidential election,  I pretty much logged off of social media for a few weeks.  It made me take pause, stop and reflect on what is important.  What would happen if we took time to meet our neighbors, maybe even to do something nice for them... If we found a good cause to support...  Maybe if we turned off the negativity and used our energy for good...  We would be better individuals... A better nation... Maybe even a better world.

In that light. I haven't been attending to this blog because I've had nothing to say. But today I'm putting it all behind me and trying to direct my energies into something positive.

Since we are in the beginning of the holiday season, I want to focus on wellness: nutrition, fitness and spiritual/emotional health.  Each post from now until the New Year will feature one of these components, essential to overall health.  I will share some healthy meal suggestions, recipes, workouts and maybe even a meditation or two.
Went on my first bike ride since September a couple weeks ago.  It was a gorgeous day.  With having to recover from both my shoulder injury and the surgery I had on my leg, it's been a struggle.  Felt so good to be back!
Questions for you...
What is your favorite healthy meal?  Would you share your recipe with me?

Oh What a Day!

Yesterday was the Ride to Remember 2016

We left Springfield, MA at about 7:00 a.m.  It was 102 miles to the Massachusetts State House, arriving shortly after 5:00 p.m.  We had a couple breaks during the day, so our actual riding time was  a little over eight hours.

I will write more about this year's experience, but I wanted to give you a peak at our day.

Dad came down to send us off.  I really appreciated him being there.

A sea of blue...this is where we started.
We had six rest stops along the way, where we were able to hydrate, get some nutrition and...

Use the restroom.  At Boston College, the only rest rooms available were the ones on the Peter Pan buses that came with us.  I had to go soooo bad.  Yikes!
Our ride was great all day!  Seriously, I had plenty of energy.  I felt good.  But the last few miles were the most exhilarating.  Look at the Prudential building off in the distance!  So awesome!
Boston Strong!  That's right!
The finish line of the Boston Marathon.
My riding buddy, Joe.  He and my husband did the ride together the first year.
Brian did it last year and said, "This is not for me."  So Joe & I rode together all day.  It was a good great ride.

We did it!!!  We made it!  And I felt great.

There is so much to say about the day and I promise to write more and tell you about this year's experience.  This morning I am exhausted.  My shoulder was in excruciating pain last night.  It's sore today, but I feel better.  I Stay tuned...

September

September is my favorite month of the year.  Apples.  Cool nights.  Crisp morning air.  Warm afternoons.  Fall has a distinct smell that just makes me happy.  In Massachusetts, it means the Big E, which is a giant fair with all kinds of goodies from all over New England and the entire Northeast, to be honest.  Now September means the Ride to Remember for me.  Not to mention, my birthday and my husband’s birthday.  I love September.

We went to Worcester to see Mitch for my birthday.  The girls at work bought me lunch and got me Extra gum.  Erica got me this awesome bracelet because she's my person!
I had a super busy summer.  I can’t believe it’s come and gone so quickly.  I work in the summer to make extra money to help with the boys’ college tuition.  It’s much lower key, but it’s not like being off for the summer.
Went apple picking yesterday with my best friend Stacy and godson Sam.  Love them apples!
My first time EVER putting my hand to canning.  My friend Liydia told me she canned some tomatoes a couple weeks ago, so I gave that a whirl this week.  What a ton of work!!!  I  made apple butter with the apples I picked yesterday.  Came out beautifully!!!  Yummy!!!  I absolutely LOVE anything apple spice or pumpkin spice.  I'm crazy about it!
School started two weeks ago and I can finally get back into a rhythm.
Before school started, the counselors work soooo hard to make sure everything goes smoothly.  We go through every student's academic records, make sure they are in the right classes and that there are no holes in their schedule.  We also enroll dozens of new students who transfer to our school.  It is an incredibly busy (and stressful) time of year for us.
Last past weekend I took a little trip to Florida to visit my family there.  My Aunt Kelly and I are close in age and I love her like a best friend.  She gets me.  I swear.  I wish we were closer so we could see each other more often.  It is hard being on opposite sides of the country.
My Aunt Kelly and I
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor; if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

It was soooo nice to get away.  I don’t really like to do all the touristy things when I visit.  I really just want to hang out by the pool, go to the beach and see my grandmother while I am there.  When I visit, I want to spend time with Kelly, catch up on the past year or so and reconnect.  That’s exactly what we did.

I’ve been feeling lost lately.  Heart broken.  I confided in Kelly what's been going on and she got it.  She did.  She shared with me her own experience she went through this past year.  I was amazed at how parallel the circumstances were.  While I felt sorry that she went through that, there was something about it that comforted me, because someone understood what I’ve been going through.  Finally.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but god is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalms 73:26
Hurricane Hermine really stirred up the Gulf of Mexico, so when we went to the beach on Saturday, the waves were huge.  By Monday, the water was all stirred up and not the normal aqua blue that it is.
Normally the water is so blue, but it was cloudy murky after the hurricane.
Being away from both the gym and my bike, I had to make do with what I had, so I put on my sneakers and went for a couple two-mile runs.  I’m not supposed to run, but I’ve been doing it anyway lately.  It takes me about 20 minutes and I get a good burn.  I have to stop once in a while to catch my breath because I feel like my lungs are going to implode and my heart is going to burst out of my chest.  If you’re from the North East, you know the roads are curvy and often hilly and the houses and vegetation provide visible landmarks so you don’t get lost.  Well, in Florida, the roads are pretty much straight for miles, the vegetation and landscape are all the same.  This meant I had to be careful not to get lost.  I did okay, check out my map:

A quick 20 minute run and I sweat like crazy!

I’ve made a decision and I’m kind of happy, albeit nervous to tell you.  It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while.  Once the finances are set, I’m going to get my credentials to become a personal trainer.  My focus will be on nutrition.  I’m not looking to do it full time.  I love my job too much for that.  But I think this would be a good opportunity to spread my wings and earn some extra income on the side.

So, check this out!!!  I hurt my shoulder last spring and was in agony for several weeks.  I haven't been able to do push-ups since, but I've been working to improve my strength and am up to 15 pushups in one set.  Three weeks ago I could only do six push-ups, so this is a huge improvement and I love the measurable outcomes.

Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.  I Timothy 4:8
I have learned so much over the past two ½+ years, that it’s time to share that with others.  Working with Mike and Dmitriy really inspired me to change my life for the better and that difference has been all the difference for me.  It’s my turn to do the same…or at least see if I can.
The same day, I did deadlifts at 135 pounds.  That was super exciting for me!  Four months ago I maxed out at 215#. which was a personal record.  However. with the shoulder pain, I couldn't deadlift at all because the weight was too much strain on the shoulder.  I won't be able to do 200# again for a while, but I can gradually increase my weight and enjoy the satisfaction of seeingI' real gains every week.
I will be writing some more here these next few weeks.  I don't want to keep on being an absentee blogger.  Stay tuned.  Future topics include:
Keeping up with "The Grind"
"Body Beautiful"
"Gym Fashion" and more...

Questionsfor you...Answer in the comment section below.
How was "Back to School" for you and your family?
Are you as crazy about apples and pumpkin spice as I am?

My Week Off

In the North East there are two school breaks before Summer Vacation.  One in February and another in the spring, usually in April.  The February break coincides with President's Day and depending on where you live, the spring break coincides with either Easter or Patriots' Day.  Patriots' Day commemorates the start of the Revolutionary War and is an official holiday in several states in the USA.  I need both breaks.

The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
Exodus 33:14

My week off has been largely focused on the puppy, Princess Leia.  I knew it would be a lot of work and tiring, but I forgot how draining it is to get up every night at 3 a.m. because she has to go out.  Wednesday night she didn't wake me up and had an accident in her crate.
She can go up the stairs, but needs help going down.
Koby is getting used to her.  Look how tiny she is compared to him.
She is so adventurous and curious.  When I was vacuuming the other day, she followed me up the stairs and got stuck about half way up.
She is absolutely adorable, especially when she's sleeping.  I am spoiling her rotten.  It's cute now when she's tiny and I let her sleep on me, but when she's 70 lbs. and expects to do the same thing, it won't be cute!  It's hard to resist her though.
I have been spending time with my friend and classmate, Cindy.  We both have to finish our field experience and do our portfolio in school administration so we can graduate in May.  We are in the same shoes, dragging our heels about doing the journal.  I really abhor writing about what I do every day and how it relates to the standards of a school administrator.  If it weren't for Cindy, I don't think I'd do it at all.  I hate it that much.
Cindy loves the puppy.  She doesn't mind coming over to work together so she can get some puppy love.
I started reading this book:
Stronger Than You Think: Becoming Whole Without Having to Be Perfect
by Kim Gaines Eckhert
I was hooked right away.  In looking back at my life long struggle with weight, I can see how instead of taking care of myself, I used other things to try to be the perfect mother, perfect wife, perfect counselor and perfect Christian.  This resulted in high levels of anxiety and depression which I dealt with by doing even more things to keep me busy.  Now that I've taken time off from everything to focus on a new career pathway and to seek a healthier lifestyle, I am more acutely aware of how my "busyness" interfered with my wellness.  As time allows (with the new puppy), I think I will really enjoy this read. This paragraph describes most of my adult life:
Lillian, in her longing for wholeness was trying to make herself complete through a flurry of activities that were leaving her exhausted.  Jesus gently calls Lillian and us to be joined to him, and to let go of our futile attempts to make ourselves whole.  Instead, we can rest in the work he has already completed in us.  "Come to me, all you who are wearing and burdened, and I will give you rest," Jesus invites us.  "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."  (Matthew 11:28-29)*
I met some classmates for breakfast the other day.
I am trying to learn how to eat like a normal person again.  I did skip the potatoes, but the French Toast and eggs were phenomenal.  Bringing balance back to my life is a slow process.  If my lifestyle has truly changed, I need to be able to eat "normal foods" once in a while.  As long as I keep track of what I am eating and stick to my calories, it's okay to eat food like this on occasion.
My mother's birthday is February 22, so I typically take her shopping and out for lunch during winter break.
We went to the mall and had a lot of fun!  I picked up a bunch of things at the Christmas Tree Shops, got these leggings at New York & Company.  The "gray" ones are actually green.  I don't have anything to wear with them yet, but it will be fun to find something.

I also got fitted for a new bra at Victoria's Secret.  Remember, I was complaining about the floating boobs.  Well, now my bra really fits. AND I was surprised that I was right about my 34B's.  I thought I was smaller than that, but it's probably just the style bra I've been wearing.  As expensive as Victoria's Secret is, it's worth the investment.

I hate that my bras are bigger than my breasts.  Now I think my new bra will solve that problem.
New leggings with my new bra.  No more floating boobs.
Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my blog.  Tracey's Getting Fit started February 18, 2015.

My very first post was entitled, "It's About More Than Just Weight Loss" and that holds true today.  My journey towards fitness has become a journey to health and wellness.  Now I seek to give back, to inspire others.

Anxiety in a man's heart weights him down, but a good word makes him glad.
Proverbs 12:25

With that said, I am at a point now in my education where I have to buckle down and complete my degree.  I need to use the same discipline it took to lose the weight and to train for the Ride to Remember and channel that into my studies.  Instead of writing a blog entry every time I get inspired about something, I am going to take my inspiration towards journaling about my Field Experience and compiling everything I need for my portfolio.  Writing my blog makes me happy, so I've decided that new entries to Tracey's Getting Fit will be a reward for completing a benchmark.  I expect to complete approximately one entry per week,  I appreciate your support and encouragement.

So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in desiring it may be matched by your completing it out of what you have.
2 Corinthians 8:11 ESV

Stay tuned.  Check back weekly for a new post.  And be sure to catch up with some of my older posts as well.

Here are a couple of my favorites from the past year:
